OpenAI Previews ChatGPT Business, Unveils Privacy Controls
April 27, 2023
OpenAI is readying ChatGPT Business, a new subscription tier “for professionals who need more control over their data as well as enterprises seeking to manage their end users.” Pricing plans have yet to be disclosed for ChatGPT Business, which will be rolling out in the coming months, but OpenAI said it will adhere to the company’s API’s data usage policies, which means that by default end users’ data would not be used to train its models. The business plan was mentioned as part of an announcement disclosing that all ChatGPT users now have the ability to turn off their chat history.
Conversations started when chat history is disabled won’t be used to train OpenAI models and won’t appear in the history sidebar, the company said in a blog post. But even conversations initiated when history is toggled “off” will be retained for 30 days, for review as needed to monitor for abuse.
Thereafter, they will be permanently deleted. OpenAI has also added an Export option that allows users to receive a data file with their conversations “and all other relevant data” in an email.
“The new capabilities come as regulatory scrutiny grows over OpenAI’s data practices,” writes TechCrunch, noting that “Italy last month banned ChatGPT for possible privacy violations, alleging that OpenAI unlawfully processed people’s data and failed to implement a system to prevent minors from accessing ChatGPT.”
Germany, Spain and France “have also begun probing OpenAI and its commercial services, focusing on ChatGPT’s GDPR adherence,” according to TechCrunch.
ChatGPT data settings can be adjusted by logging in to your account and “selecting the three dots next to your email address in the bottom-left corner of the screen. From there, click Settings > Show and toggle off the Chat History & Training setting to turn off conversation history,” The Verge explains. You can also select the new Export data option using the three-dot menu.
“Once you’ve disabled your chat history, you’ll notice that none of your new conversations save to your history bar on the left side of the screen,” writes The Verge, adding that “you can quickly turn the option back on again by hitting the green Enable chat history button that appears in the column.”
The forthcoming ChatGPT Business plan will offer subscribers a way to preserve chat history even after opting out of having your chat used as training data, but as of now there are no plans to make that functionality broadly available. OpenAI launched a $20 per month subscription tier called ChatGPT Plus in February.
