Oppo Find N5 Is World’s Thinnest ‘Book-Style’ Foldable Phone

Chinese phone manufacturer Oppo has developed what it is calling the world’s thinnest book-style foldable phone. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, the Oppo Find N5 runs on Android and includes Google’s Gemini AI to power its Oppo AI intelligent features. The company has put a lot of effort into reducing the visibility of the display’s crease, said to be imperceptible at certain angles and nearly impossible to detect by touch. Beyond that, it has IPX6/IPX8/IPX9 water resistance ratings and 50W wireless charging. The Oppo Find N5 is scheduled for global release on February 20.

Android Authority says it expects the Find N5 “to launch in the U.S. as the OnePlus Open 2,” given that Oppo has branded its U.S. phones using the OnePlus name. The fact that, as Android Authority points out, the OnePlus brand hasn’t established much of a presence here could mean a rebranding.

The company’s English-language official launch website touts it as the Find N5, and there is also a video teaser posted ahead of the launch.

The Verge reports that “Oppo is careful to use that ‘book-style’ disclaimer, because the Find N5 isn’t quite as thin as Huawei’s trifold Mate XT” when open, though it is “comfortably thinner than Huawei’s phone when closed, helped by only having two panels to fold, not three.”

“The crease isn’t gone just yet, but at this point it’s close enough that it’s difficult to imagine being bothered by it,” The Verge suggests.

In a first look, PhoneArena says the subtlety of the crease will be “one of the major selling points” for the new phone “when deciding whether to choose the Oppo Find N5 over other foldables (or tri-foldables) like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 or Huawei Mate XT Ultimate.”

Another important factor will be the price, which was not announced (though based on speculative pricing for India, it may cost around $1,800).

PhoneArena reports this latest Oppo model measures “under 4mm when unfolded,” though Oppo hasn’t release those specs. At 4mm unfolded it would be ”thinner than even the iPad Pro M4 (2024), which comes in at 5.1mm and definitely thinner than an iPhone. In fact, it’s almost as thin as a USB-C port.”

Gadgets 360 writes “the Oppo Find N5 will offer a Hasselblad tuned camera system.” ReadWrite points out that the Oppo Find N5 is “said to be the ‘world’s only folding flagship that supports IPX6, IPX8 and IPX9 full-level waterproof at the same time.’”
