AMC Introduces Movie Ticket Prices Based on Seat Location

AMC is switching to tiered ticketing, with premium seats costing more. Sightline at AMC will provide seating priced according to the view of the movie screen, with sections designated Value Sightline, Standard Sightline and Preferred Sightline. AMC chief marketing officer and EVP Eliot Hamlisch said Sightline’s “experienced-based pricing” puts movie ticket sales more in line with the way seats are priced at other entertainment venues, such as those featuring music and sports. Sightline at AMC has launched in select markets and the company expects it to expand to additional AMC and AMC DINE-IN locations through 2023. Read more

Google and Microsoft Announce AI-Based Search Functions

Microsoft unveiled a ChatGPT-powered version of its Bing search engine on Tuesday, following Google’s announcement it is testing a conversational artificial intelligence app called Bard, expected to launch publicly in the coming weeks with applications for products starting with Google Search. Google will next month begin onboarding developers, creators and enterprises for its generative language API (which will initially utilize a lightweight version of LaMDA and eventually offer “a range of models”). Getty Files a Lawsuit Against Stability AI for Using Its Images

Getty Images has filed a lawsuit against Stability AI, alleging the company trained its Stable Diffusion art generator using 12 million images from the Getty database without permission or compensation. The stock photography firm claims Stability AI engaged in “brazen infringement” of Getty Images’ intellectual property “on a staggering scale.” The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Delaware. Last month, a trio of artists seeking federal class action status also sued Stability AI, along with AI startup Midjourney and the Wix-owned DeviantArt, which uses Stable Diffusion for its own DreamUp generative imager. Netflix Premium Offers 700+ Titles That Feature Spatial Audio

Netflix is hoping that offering cinema-like spatial audio on a catalog of more than 700 titles for those who subscribe to its $20 per month premium tier will encourage more customers to upgrade. Spatial audio is engineered to deliver a 360-degree audio experience, including sounds that appear to come from behind the viewer. Customers who subscribe to Netflix’s Standard or Basic plans will have access to some spatial audio titles “but only on a small, select number,” the company said, describing the audio tech as “a game changer for the Premium plan viewing experience.” Netflix Premium already supports 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos and Netflix Calibrated Mode. Google’s Investment in Anthropic Heats Up the AI Arms Race

Google has taken a 10 percent stake in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic for about $300 million. The move follows reports that the Alphabet-owned company has prioritized an acceleration of AI efforts, so as not to get left behind by OpenAI and its increasingly popular ChatGPT app. The cash infusion gives Google a roughly 10 percent stake in the San Francisco-based Anthropic, which Financial Times described as among “a new generation of companies trying to claim a place in the booming field of ‘generative AI,’” a sector that has triggered a veritable “AI arm’s race,” according to FT.
