Pimax Intros VR Headset with Switchable QLED, OLED Panels
April 24, 2024
Virtual reality firm Pimax has unveiled two new headsets. The Crystal Super is a high-resolution performance model which starts at $1,800, while the Crystal Light will carry a base list of $700. The Crystal Super packs 29.5 million pixels and allows users to swap between QLED and micro-OLED panels, which Pimxax claims is a first. The Crystal Light offers the same 16.6 million pixels as its Crystal predecessor, but at a more affordable price. At its annual Frontier virtual event, Pimax also shared the specs for its 60G Airlink module, designed for high-fidelity wireless PCVR using WiGig technology.
“QLED and micro-OLED each offers distinct advantages, and Crystal Super allows users to choose between the two or opt for both,” Pimax explains in a blog post, noting that “this flexibility stems from the world’s first replaceable optical engine system invented by Pimax, which combines the displays and lenses as a single detachable module.”
TechRadar calls the swappable optics “one of the most unique display features we’ve ever seen,” adding that it will allow users to optimize their VR experience.
“Are you playing a frightening horror adventure that has you exploring dark spaces filled with monsters? Then an OLED screen’s excellent dark contrast will be just what you need,” TechRadar writes, adding that “kicking back with a vibrant VR social app” might inspire a swap to the QLED screen “to be dazzled by the colors it can produce.”
The Crystal Super “drops some of the extraneous features of the original Crystal, like the standalone processor, but keeps some others,” Road to VR reports, highlighting features such as “14.7MP (3,840 × 3,840) per-eye resolution optionally using QLED and miniLED (120Hz) or micro-OLED (90Hz).”
Pimax calls the high-end unit a “leap forward” from the preceding Crystal “with its greatly increased number of pixels, enabling a much larger field of view (FOV) and higher pixels per degree (PPD) simultaneously.”
“Unlike Crystal Light, Crystal Super will retain eye tracking with automatic IPD adjustment and dynamic foveated rendering capabilities” and also comes with onboard audio, per Road to VR. “The base model of Crystal Super with QLED display is priced at $1,800 with inside-out tracking, while the micro-OLED model is priced at $2,000. Or, you can buy both for $2,400, thanks to the Crystal Super’s ability to swap between different display modules.”
Release dates were not announced, but Pimax said it is aiming for a Q4 2024 launch for the Crystal Light, which “ditches the original version’s on-board Snapdragon XR2 processor, battery, and storage, which allowed the headset to run in a standalone mode without a PC,” and is offered at less than half the price of the prior model, explains Road to VR.
