Pinterest Introduces the Ability to Convert Boards into Videos

To address Gen Z’s ongoing interest in social video content, Pinterest announced it is updating its app so that users will have the ability to create video versions of the more than 10 billion curated boards on Pinterest. The videos can then be shared on popular social platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Pinterest users have been using manual methods such as screenshots and green screen effects to share their boards on other apps. According to the company — which refers to this as the “mecore” trend — searches for boards labeled “mecore” jumped 255 percent since last year. The updated approach to board sharing is designed to leverage this growing trend.

“Gen Z makes up over 40 percent of our global monthly users on Pinterest and are our most engaged generation, with a significant increase in the number of boards created by Gen Z Pinners compared to last year,” said Rachel Hardy, director of consumer product marketing at Pinterest, in a news statement.

“We are enhancing the board features based on user feedback and, this year, board sharing is one of our critical investments as users value the ability to share their creative processes on different platforms and find inspiration from others,” she added.

To promote the launch of board sharing, the news release includes links to new boards from “power pinners” Avril Lavigne and Tierra Whack, among others.

Pinterest’s upgrade “was inspired by the video-sharing activity that was already taking place on apps like TikTok,” reports TechCrunch. Two years ago, Pinterest rolled out a “collage-making app called Shuffles that quickly took off with Gen Z creators on TikTok. The app, still in invite-only mode at the time, went viral as Pinterest users published their so-called ‘aesthetic’ collages and mood boards set to music and posted them on TikTok.”

The popularity of Shuffles would eventually lead to another feature that enabled shoppable collages.

“With board sharing, Pinterest users will be able to share their boards in a more creative way on social media,” TechCrunch explains. “The shared boards will also feature links that, when clicked, bring viewers back to the complete board on Pinterest where they can browse through or shop the collected content.”

“Pinterest’s new board sharing process is now active for all users,” notes Social Media Today, suggesting that “with more than 500 million monthly actives, there will definitely be a lot of people” who should likely be interested in trying it out.
