PlayStation to Offer Streaming Movies via Sony Pictures Core

Sony is leveraging the power of its hardware platforms to expand its streaming efforts. What has since 2021 been known as Bravia Core is now rebranded as Sony Pictures Core and will be coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 game consoles, with access to 2,000 current and classic films available for rent or purchase. In addition to being able to order Sony Pictures content through Bravia XR TVs, users will be able to transact straight through their consoles, with access to popular films such as “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Uncharted,” “No Hard Feelings,” “Bullet Train” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” among others.

“With Sony Pictures Core on PS5 and PS4, you’ll be able to purchase select Sony Pictures films during an exclusive, early access window,” explains Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior Director of Global Marketing Evan Stern in a blog post. In addition to the U.S., Sony Pictures Core will be available via PlayStation in the UK, France, Germany and Japan.

Also, “PlayStation Plus Premium/Deluxe members will get access to a curated catalog of 100 movies through the Sony Pictures Core app to stream on-demand from the Sony Pictures library — for no extra charge,” Variety writes, adding that the catalog will be “ad-free and updated periodically.”

Sony Pictures Core “includes what the company calls Pure Stream, ‘which can stream HDR movies at up to 80Mbps — similar to 4K UHD Blu-ray — on a wide range of content,’” reports The Verge, noting that is a “significantly higher bitrate than anything Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Max, Vudu, or other streamers will give you.”

Sony previously owned the Crackle streaming service but sold it to Chicken Soup for the Soul in 2018. It also experimented with PlayStation Vue, now discontinued. In India it offers the OTT service Sony LIV. In 2014 Sony Pictures Television launched the cable network GET (Great Entertainment Television).
