Plex Adds Public Profiles and Ways to Share Program Reviews

Free, ad-supported streaming video service Plex is introducing a new user interface and expanding its social media overlay, adding the ability for users to publicly share their Plex profiles and allow others to read and comment on their movie reviews. By default, all Plex users can be searched out by other Plex users within the app (unless they’ve changed that setting). Now, by opting to make profiles public on watch.plex.tv, they can be shared using the link and will also be searchable on the Web, showing what users have watched and have added to their watchlist, and more. California-based Plex offers ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) as well as linear FAST channels.

“Plex users will have the option to make their Ratings & Reviews visible to other users on Plex through a new setting,” TechCrunch writes, explaining that “you can choose between allowing anyone to see these reviews or only those signed in to Plex.”

The settings include options to limit review visibility to Friends or Friends of Friends. Reviews can also be made private. Plex will set new and existing users to “Friends” by default, according to TechCrunch.

Along with adding the new social networking feature, Plex is previewing a new user interface, initially via Apple TV. “The redesign includes updated navigation, more personal media customization, easier feature access, a richer experience with more artwork, and Plex’s various social networking features,” reports TechCrunch.

Plex Pass subscribers will also be able to access HEVC hardware encoding for improved video quality at reduced bandwidths. (Plex Pass runs $4.99 per month or $39.99 annually.)

“If you’re a Plex user who owns an Apple TV with tvOS 14 or later, you can now take the company’s new user experience for a spin,” writes Digital Trends, noting that the beta Plex app was “previously only available to testers on mobile Android and iOS devices” and is now taking the major step up to TVs, “arguably the most important screen for the popular media streaming and organization software.”

“Please keep in mind this is nowhere close to perfect, but we want to get feedback from the community as early as we can,” Plex said in a blog post that promises “the app will get better over time,” with “more platforms coming soon.”
