Plex and VLC Streaming Media Apps Are Coming to Apple TV
September 15, 2015
Analysts seem to agree that the most promising aspect of the recently unveiled fourth-generation Apple TV is its App Store. A wave of compelling apps could easily generate more interest in the device. Plex, for example, which works with Chromecast and Fire TV as a tool for organizing personal media libraries, and has long been sought after by Apple TV users, is planning an app for the new Apple TV. Plex co-founder Scott Olechowski has confirmed plans for a new app as the team awaits the tvOS developer beta. Meanwhile, a tvOS version of the cross-platform VLC media player is also being planned.
Thanks to Apple TV’s App Store, “the device could see a new group of customers jumping onboard,” reports Digital Trends, “as the developers behind Plex have announced that an app is planned for the Apple TV, something that many have dreamed of for years now.”
“Plex is designed to organize personal media libraries consisting of video and music files, allowing them to be easily streamed to TVs and other devices, either locally or remotely,” explains MacRumors.
“There is no question we will be able to offer Plex on the platform,” said Olechowski. “There are multiple ways to go about it, based on the tvOS SDK we now have access to. We are now evaluating the best path for Plex and will begin work in earnest once we have evaluated the options.”
According to MacRumors, a tvOS version of VLC is also in the works, although details and release dates for the media streaming apps have yet to be revealed.
“Finally, some code to build VLCKit for the new tvOS was merged,” wrote VideoLAN’s Jean-Baptiste Kempf in a blog post (VideoLAN is the nonprofit responsible for the popular VLC media player). “It’s very early though, but we have video playback!”
Developers are currently placing their orders for Apple TV SDKs, so we should expect to hear more about Plex, VLC and others in the near future.
