‘Reddit Answers’ Wants to Gain More Users Searching In-App
December 11, 2024
Reddit has launched a new AI-powered search tool called Reddit Answers. Reddit is already appearing regularly in Google Search returns. The new interface provides a way users can utilize a conversational model to get answers directly from the social platform. “Once a question is asked, curated summaries of relevant conversations and details across Reddit will appear, including links to related communities and posts,” according to Reddit. Whether users will want to skip their usual go-to search engines in favor of querying Reddit alone could have long term ramifications for the 19-year old social platform, which went public in 2023.
The Verge reports “Google is the only major search engine that shows recent Reddit results,” but that Reddit is “cracking down on where you can search for things from its platform and “probably would prefer if you did searches” directly with Reddit Answers potentially providing “a good way to do so.”
A test of the new interface revealed that in addition to a query box, “the initial Reddit Answers page also floats a bunch of suggested searches you can click on, like ‘favorite Nintendo character of all time,’ ‘best mystery novels of 2025,’ and ‘tips for flying with a baby for the first time,’” according to The Verge.
Clicking on the recommended searches triggers a list of returns “and some bulleted suggestions with hyperlinks on the text and an arrow to click to see the source of the information. When you click either, a sidebar pops up showing the exact post where the information comes from,” The Verge writes.
Comparing the Reddit Answers returns to those produced by Google Search, The Verge notes that “Google’s version, which doesn’t have the summaries or bullet points, isn’t as immediately informative as Reddit Answers,” but concludes the propensity of AI in general to make “some pretty bad errors” mitigates in favor of the Google results.
Reddit VP of Product Serkan Piantino told CNBC “the company has been testing Reddit Answers for six months,” describing it as “a bridge to the content” rather than a replacement for it.
Reddit Answers will initially be available to “a limited number of users” in the U.S. in English on the web via browsers and for desktop, “not on Old Reddit and iOS,” clarifies The Verge, quoting Piantino saying, “We’re working on Android as we speak.”
A Reddit blog post mentions a “plan to expand to additional languages and locations in the future.”
