Report Predicts the Cloud as Top Consumer Trend for 2013
December 17, 2012
Cloud computing (and cloud reliance reshaping device needs) will be the major trend in consumer electronics for 2013, according to a new report from Ericsson ConsumerLab. “The electronics firm’s ‘Ten Hot Consumer Trends 2013‘ report suggests that not only is cloud computing becoming increasingly important in our daily lives, but young people’s use of the Internet will drive new businesses and products in the coming year,” reports CNET.
According to Ericsson, more than half of tablet owners and 40 percent of those with smartphones in the U.S., Australia, Japan and Sweden already use various cloud-based services. “Other products — from cars to cameras — will also increasingly require access to the Internet,” notes the report.
“Market intelligence firm IHS iSuppli also found consumer-focused cloud-based services to be one of the biggest hits this year, backing up this prediction,” notes the post. “The company said that the number of cloud-based service subscriptions surpassed 375 million in the first half of 2012, and this number is expected to rise to 625 million worldwide in 2013.”
Additional trends predicted in the Ericsson report include: 2) computing for a scattered mind (switching from PCs and laptops to tablets and smartphones); 3) bring your own broadband to work (via smartphones with favorite apps and subscriptions); 4) city dwellers go relentlessly mobile; 5) personal social security networks; 6) women drive smartphone market; 7) cities become hubs for social creativity; 8) in-line shopping; 9) TV goes social; and 10) learning is transformed by personal tech, and various internal and external forces.
Ericsson ConsumerLab bases its annual report on interviews with 100,000 participants from more than 40 countries.
