Research Points to Millennials Spending $62 Billion on Media
January 19, 2015
Deloitte forecasts that the 83 million 18- to 34-year-old consumers in North America will spend about $62 billion on media consumption in 2015, an average of $750 per person. Roughly 80 percent of millennials are projected to spend an average of $80 per month on pay TV, with another $40 per year for streaming video services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. The same demographic is likely to spend about $100 on concerts and $25 a year on music downloads and streaming services, according to Deloitte.
“Pay TV is a surprisingly large part of the equation, accounting for almost half of that spending,” reports Re/code. “Deloitte estimates that 70 percent of millennials live away from their parents’ homes — and eight out of 10 will pay a monthly fee for television in 2015. So much for all the discussions about ‘cord nevers,’ a group who opt never to pay for a cable or satellite TV subscription.”
Deloitte expects that millennials are likely to spend about $100 on video games in 2015. Two-thirds of North American consumers 16- to 34-years-old describe themselves as “regular” or “avid” gamers.
Interestingly, millennials are still looking to visit the movie theater, especially the 18-to 24-year-olds. This demographic represents a mere 10 percent of the population in the U.S. and Canada, but 20 percent of box office spending.
“Deloitte estimates the typical millennial — someone who owns a new smartphone, replaces his or her computer and tablet every four years and buys a game console every five years — will spend roughly $3,000 a year on hardware and connectivity,” notes Re/code.
