Sony 4K 60p PTZ Broadcast Camera Boasts AI Auto Framing

Sony Electronics is previewing a new flagship 4K 60p pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera model, the BRC-AM7, which has an integrated lens that uses artificial intelligence for PTZ Auto Framing technology to control advanced tracking and focus. The camera provides “accurate and natural automatic tracking of moving subjects,” making it ideal for live events and sports productions at broadcast quality. Set for release in 2025, Sony says the BRC-AM7 is the world’s “smallest and lightest” integrated lens PTZ camera, weighing in at just over 8 pounds. The camera is among the numerous Sony products featured at NAB 2024 in Las Vegas.

At a bit under 7-inches wide by nearly 9-inches high and less than 8-inches deep, its dimensions are small, too. “But don’t let the compact size fool you — this little shooter is loaded with imaging tech,” writes TechSpot, singling out “the headliner” as Sony’s PTZ Auto Framing and object tracking.

“Essentially, the camera uses built-in AI to automatically keep your subject in frame and focus based on a person’s body, head, face, clothing, and other visual cues,” TechSpot reports.

“The size and weight promote greater freedom including increased installation flexibility, broader accessibility in challenging locations, and more vantage points,” according to NewscastStudio.

The BRC-AM7 is designed to integrate seamlessly with Sony’s professional camera ecosystem, “providing compatibility and seamless color matching,” the company explains in a news announcement.

“We recently incorporated AI-based auto-tracking and Auto Framing technology into our models and the feedback was tremendous,” said Kento Sayama, Deputy VP, imaging solutions, Sony Electronics. “The camera’s ability to consistently track and frame talent will provide production efficiencies by taking time and guess work out of creating content while providing high production values.”

By combining the 1.0-type 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) with a stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor and its latest BIONZ XR image-processing engine, “the BRC-AM7 achieves 4K 60p high-resolution imagery with less noise,” Sony notes, adding that “5K oversampling allows users to capture high-resolution 4K video, and it also supports 4K HDR imagery,” providing clear bright and dark scenes.

A newly developed all-in-one lens offers a 20x optical zoom and Clear Image Zoom, “an all-pixel super-resolution zoom that allows high magnification zooming while maintaining resolution, providing telephoto capture up to 30x in 4K or 40x in Full HD,” reports NewscastStudio.

“The BRC-AM7 supports SRT, RTMP, RTSP, NDI, and optical fiber, enabling remote production over IP networks,” notes TVBEurope,” adding that “it is compatible with VISCA over IP, S700PTP protocol, and CGI, allowing for remote camera control via external commands.”
