Sony’s Wireless PlayStation Portal Coming to Market This Fall

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced its new wireless gaming device, the PlayStation Portal remote player, will debut in time for the holiday season. The handheld unit streams PlayStation 5 games over Wi-Fi, displaying the action on an eight-inch LCD screen in 1080p resolution at 60 fps. The player will be priced at $199.99. Sony is positioning the PlayStation Portal as ideal for multigame households where players share a TV or want to play PS5 games in another room of the house. Since the Portal operates by mirroring the PS5, it can also display other media.

What it can’t do is drive its own local display. But the Wi-Fi connection allows for quick transitions from the PS5 console to the Portal, which can play supported games that are installed on the PS5 console, SIE explains in a blog post.

It also features controllers that use Sony’s DualSense technology and “look very much like” the DualSense controllers used on the PS5, with support for “adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, so PS5 games will feel similar to using a dedicated DualSense controller,” The Verge writes, noting it requires an “Internet connection capable of at least 5Mbps, and Sony is recommending 15Mbps for the best experience.”

Currently, “there’s no support for PS VR2 games. You’ll still need to hook your headset up to your PS5 directly,” reports Engadget, adding that players interested in “cloud game streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium” will need “to install a game on a PS5 to play it remotely on the PlayStation Portal.”

The PlayStation Portal doesn’t support Bluetooth, but “uses a PlayStation Link wireless technology — a new proprietary standard for PlayStation devices” designed for low-latency, lossless audio, The Verge explains.

Also this fall, SIE plans to release its first wireless earbuds, called Pulse Explore, along with an over-the-ear wireless headset, the Pulse Elite, both of which work with PS Link. The Portal also has a 3.5mm audio jack for wired earphones.
