Spotify Wrapped: Swift Leads a Banner Year for Female Artists
December 6, 2024
Taylor Swift ranked first among the world’s musical artists on the annual Spotify Wrapped chart that ranks the year’s top songs, albums, podcasts and audiobooks. Her more than 26.6 billion global streams earned her the preeminent title of Spotify’s Global Top Artist for the second consecutive year. The Weeknd, Bad Bunny, Drake and Billie Eilish rounded out the top performers, at numbers 2 through 5, respectively. Women dominated the global Top 10 for albums, led by Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology” followed by Eilish’s “Hit Me Soft and Hard.” Swift claimed a total of three slots among the Most-Streamed Albums Globally.
Swift’s “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” nabbed no. 6, with “Lover” clocking in at no. 8. Female artists including Sabrina Carpenter, SZA and Ariana Grande owned slots 1 through 8, while Benson Boone and The Weeknd filled out the top 10 global albums, according to Wrapped 2024.
Swift’s “Tortured Poets” broke several Spotify records, including becoming the first album to top 300 million streams in one day and more than 1 billion in the first week of release,” its “massive popularity” leading to “a banner year for women artists,” reports Variety.
Spotify Wrapped “allows users to compare their music listening habits with other fans around the world,” explains CNBC of the annual data dive, which the streamer rolled out to global users this week.
“This year, Spotify added additional artificial intelligence features to enhance individual users’ Wrapped experiences, including personalized AI podcasts about users’ music listening histories, a feature powered by Google’s NotebookLM and stemming from an expanded partnership between the two companies,” CNBC reports. Global Podcasts were led by “The Joe Rogan Experience” followed by “Call Her Daddy.”
Among the “culture-making, fandom-shaking” trends from Spotify:
- Genres like country crossing over like never before in the capable hands of artists such as Beyoncé, Shaboozey, Lana Del Rey, and Post Malone.
- Indie acts like Clairo, Mk.gee, and The Marías garnering both critical acclaim and streaming success.
- Collaborations between artists (e.g., Billie Eilish and Charli XCX, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, and Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus), creating some of the most-talked-about culture-shifting moments of the year.
Carpenter, who made her Wrapped debut this year, topped the list of Most-Streamed Songs in the United States, with “Espresso.” Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” was no. 2.
Spotify also offers users a look at their audio selections of the year via a personalized Wrapped, downloadable in the app.
