Study: More Top Movies and TV Shows Available Legally Online
September 26, 2014
According to a KPMG study, Hollywood is now offering more content through legal digital venues than ever before. As of the end of 2013, 94 percent of the 808 top films analyzed by KPMG were available legally for U.S. consumers through online VOD services, while 85 percent of the 724 most popular and critically acclaimed TV shows were also available. In related news, the amount of Netflix streaming video has grown 350 percent in the last 10 quarters, and now averages 93.2 minutes per subscriber daily.
Research from The Diffusion Group estimates that Netflix streamed about 7 billion hours of video during Q2 2014, up from 2 billion hours in Q4 2011.
“Without question, Netflix’s streaming growth has been phenomenal. But to put the figures into context, Americans still watch more than three times as much traditional television,” reports Variety. “That was a whopping 142 hours and 38 minutes of live TV per month in the second quarter of 2014 (down about four hours from the year prior), along with 14 hours and 13 minutes of television programming on DVRs and video-on-demand, according to Nielsen.”
KPMG’s study analyzed the availability of popular movies and TV shows on 34 online VOD services including Netflix, Apple’s iTunes, Amazon Prime and Hulu. The study did not include TV Everywhere services.
“Among the movie titles in the study, 94 percent were available on electronic sell-through platforms like iTunes,” Variety explains in another article. “But just 16 percent were available on SVOD services like Netflix, KPMG found. For TV shows, 81 percent were available on EST and 44 percent were on SVOD, while just 5 percent were on ad-supported VOD services.”
