TAG Heuer Plans to Introduce Sleek, Intel-Powered Smartwatch
December 8, 2014
Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer is planning to unveil its first smartwatch, possibly during CES in January. According to a source familiar with the matter, the watch will run on an Intel processor, likely with a focus on fitness features (measuring steps, calories burned, quality of sleep). But unlike most smartwatches, TAG Heuer’s offering is expected to look less like a touchscreen gadget and more like a traditional wristwatch. If not unveiled in Las Vegas next month, the watch will be announced during Q1 2015.
At the Baselworld international watch and jewelry show in September, TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver announced his company would release smartwatches in 2015.
“TAG Heuer’s watch will look similar to a regular wristwatch, unlike most smartwatches today that come with touchscreens and look more like gadgets than timepieces,” reports Business Insider, suggesting the watch would likely look similar to the Swiss-made Withings Activite (pictured right).
“The move wouldn’t be too surprising — TAG Heuer said it was working on a smartwatch back in September after rumors suggested it was working on a watch with Apple.”
Intel’s role in new smartwatches should come as no surprise. “The chip manufacturer is heavily invested in wearable tech, and recently gained plenty of attention when it launched the MICA smart bracelet, a wearable aimed at women, made with high-end materials, and designed in conjunction with fashion house Opening Ceremony,” adds Digital Trends.
“It continues to make high-profile partnerships with fashion and luxury brands — such as eyewear mega-corp Luxxotica — that are eager to capitalize on the growing trend,” notes DT.
