Apple Final Cut Pro 11 Adds AI Features Powered by M Chips

After more than a decade, Apple has released Final Cut Pro 11, its first major update to the non-linear editing app. New features include AI-powered masking, spatial video editing for projects destined for the Apple Vision Pro and the ability to generate captions directly in the timeline, as well as some general workflow improvements. Final Cut Pro 11 is free for current users while newbies will pay $299 for a one-time purchase. Improvements have also been made to Final Cut Pro for iPad and Final Cut Camera, adding new creative options across Mac, iPad and iPhone. Adobe Promos AI in Premiere Pro, ‘Generate Video’ and More

Adobe has launched a public beta of its Generate Video app, part of the Firefly Video model, which users can try for free on a dedicated website. Login is required, and there is still a waitlist for unfettered access, but the Web app facilitates up to five seconds of video generation using text and image prompts. It can turn 2D pictures into 3D animation and is also capable of producing video with dynamic text.  The company has also added an AI feature called “Extend Video” to Premiere Pro to lengthen existing footage by two seconds. Free Adobe Content Authenticity Web App Shields Against AI

Adobe is introducing a free, web-based Content Authenticity app that lets creators “sign” their work with the aim of protecting rights and controlling attribution against unwanted AI attention. It allows creators to assign “do not train” tags to images, video or audio. Batch designation is another convenience those with voluminous output will appreciate as a time saver. Users can select the Generative AI Training and Usage Preference options in the Adobe Content Authenticity app to set preferences, whether or not the work was created using Adobe Creative Cloud apps. Amazon, Google, Microsoft and OpenAI Join the EU’s AI Pact

The European Commission has released a list of more than 100 companies that have become signatories to the EU’s AI Pact. While Google, Microsoft and OpenAI are among them, Apple and Meta are not. The voluntary AI Pact is aimed at eliciting policies on AI deployment during the period before the legally binding AI Act takes full effect. The EU AI Pact focuses on transparency in three core areas: internal AI governance, high-risk AI systems mapping and promoting AI literacy and awareness among staff to support ethical development. California Enacts Laws for Sub Canceling, Digital Downloads

California’s “click to cancel” bill has become law, making it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions. Companies that offer online or in-app sign-ups will now have to make canceling or unsubscribing available online or in-app as well. Assembly Bill 2863 was signed into law this week by Governor Gavin Newsom, though companies have until the middle of next year to comply. Consumers have long complained about companies making it easy to sign up but difficult to cancel services. Google Unveils Gemini-Powered Ad Features and AI Image ID

AI-powered ad campaigns “are continuing to deliver big results for businesses large and small,” according to Google, which has put Gemini to work for Google Ads. The company announced at the DMEXCO digital marketing event in Cologne a new suite of Gemini-powered tools aimed at making the experience even better by providing additional insights and more control over where and how marketing assets are deployed globally using Google Ads. For starters, Gemini’s “conversational experience” for search campaigns will expand its language palette, making auto-generated headlines and images available in German, French and Spanish in the months ahead. Adobe Publicly Demos Firefly Text- and Image-to Video Tools

Adobe is showcasing upcoming generative AI video tools that build on the Firefly video model the software giant announced in April. The offerings include a text-to-video feature and one that generates video from pictures. Each outputs clips of up to five seconds. Adobe has developed Firefly as the generative component of the AI integration it is rolling out across its Adobe’s Creative Cloud applications, which previously focused on editing and now, thanks to gen AI, incorporate creation. Bill Mandating GenAI Watermarks Gains Support in California

Adobe, OpenAI and Microsoft are among the major firms backing a California bill that would require tech companies to label AI-generated content with watermarks embedded in the metadata. Such data is easily accessible via browser for material circulated on the Internet, and the initiative would likely involve a campaign to educate the general public on how to find it. Canva Aims to Boost Its GenAI Efforts with Leonardo Purchase

Graphic design company Canva announced it is acquiring fellow Australian startup Leonardo AI with plans to have Leonardo’s 120 employees, including executives, join the Canva AI team. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sydney-based Leonardo has been gaining attention for its advanced generative AI platform that helps users create images and art based on the open-source Stable Diffusion model developed by Stability AI. The Leonardo team claims its offering is different than other AI art platforms since it provides users with more control. Adobe Adds New Firefly AI Features to Illustrator, Photoshop

Adobe is bringing more Firefly AI features to its popular Photoshop and Illustrator design platforms. The upgrade is a significant step forward for Adobe since the 2023 debut of Firefly, and sees Photoshop finally getting in-app ability to generate AI images, and also a new Generative Shape Fill that is still in beta, allowing designers to quickly add detailed vectors to shapes by entering text prompts directly in the Contextual Taskbar. Microsoft Designer Adds AI Editing, Launches Mobile Release

Microsoft has officially moved its AI-powered Designer app out of preview, making the Canva competitor available to iOS and Android users. The app uses text prompts to generate images and designs for items such as logos, greeting cards, stickers and invitations. Powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 image model, Designer is available as an app in Windows and as a free mobile app. New capabilities include the ability to edit existing designs and the addition of “prompt templates” to help users who are starting the design process with a blank canvas. “Just describe what you want to see, and Designer can create it for you,” explains Microsoft. Qualcomm All-In on Copilot+ PCs Boosting Speed, Battery Life

Qualcomm is expanding beyond mobile and into the desktop market in a big way, bringing its AI-enabled Snapdragon X series chips to “all PC form factors,” CEO Cristiano Amon said onstage at Computex this week. Under the theme of “the PC reborn,” Amon said the Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus processors powering Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC experiences are also upping their mobile game. In addition to improving AI experiences with “the world’s fastest and most efficient NPU for laptops,” the chips can deliver “up to multiple days of battery life,” unfettered those on the go from power outlets. Web-based editing application Canva unveiled a significant makeover this week in Los Angeles at the Canva Create event. Touting “a whole new Canva,” the company shared changes that impact the entire platform, from pricing to tools, templates and user interface. The new editor, designed to make it easier to jump between projects, is “available to the first one million users who discover the secret portal hidden in their Canva homepage, before becoming available to the entire Canva community from August.” The 11-year-old company, which claims 183 million free and paid monthly users, also unveiled an enterprise solution. Adobe Considers Sora, Pika and Runway AI for Premiere Pro

Adobe plans to add generative AI capabilities to its Premiere Pro editing platform and is exploring the update with third-party AI technologies including OpenAI’s Sora, as well as models from Runway and Pika Labs, making it easier “to draw on the strengths of different models” within everyday workflows, according to Adobe. Editors will gain the ability to generate and add objects into scenes or shots, remove unwanted elements with a click, and even extend frames and footage length.
