Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Graph Search earlier this year, a new way for users of the social network to access information. Considered the network’s third pillar, along with its News Feed and Timeline, Graph Search is based on Facebook’s social graph, which is essentially a map of more than a trillion connections between users. After six months of beta testing, the product is now available to those who use the American English version of the site. Google has announced a new data tracking service for Google Trends that offers information and related charts regarding the most-searched people, locations and assorted topics across more than 40 categories. The Top Charts feature provides those interested with details based on rankings by search interest for topics from movies to cities to sports teams to tourist attractions. DARPA Turns to Algorithms to Improve Machine Learning

Pentagon research agency DARPA is readying a four-year project to design artificial intelligence systems based on machines that can teach themselves using algorithms. An additional goal is to make it possible for ordinary people to build these machines. The agency believes it is possible to design and build computers that learn and evolve, not by modeling them after the human brain, but rather by using algorithms. Google Algorithm Change Not Effective, According to RIAA

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the change to Google’s algorithm, which is designed to takes sites with higher rates of copyright-infringed material and give them a lower search rating is not helping ongoing piracy problems. A new report from the RIAA notes that none of the sites were demoted in a significant way and search results were nearly unaffected. The relationship between Hollywood and Facebook may be showing signs of strain.
