CES: 6P Color Pivots to Provide New Color Management Tools

6P Color, the color science technology company that innovated the multi-primary color system, recently pivoted its focus to provide color management tools for display manufacturers to reproduce colors the way they are intended at the source. The new C-suite leadership brought in four months ago is transitioning the company to this new direction. During CES, the ETC team met with 6P Color CTO Matthew Brantley; Board Member Steven Poster, ASC; and Lead Product Manager Kennen Dietz. They explained their tech could deliver immediate improvements by addressing the shortcoming in current displays of not fully representing the color space of an image source in the displays’ native gamuts. Roku Adds New Search, Sports, Music Features with OS 12.5

Roku TV and the Roku player are getting new features including better search and discovery to complement its more than 400 free live linear TV channels. The upgrades will begin rolling out with the introduction of Roku OS 12.5 in the coming weeks. Highlights include the ability to follow a favorite sports team, new music channels and the ability to link Roku’s Photo Streams image-based screensaver to a Google Photos account, so personal pictures can be displayed between viewing events. The changes are across a wide range of features targeting sports enthusiasts and others, including technical purists and casual viewers who need help finding entertainment options. Academy Software Foundation Unveils Updated OpenColorIO

The Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) debuted OpenColorIO version 2 (OCIO v2) for developers to integrate into their applications. OCIO is an industry standard for consistent color management across VFX and animation pipelines that has been used on hundreds of feature film productions. One major enhancement is native implementation of ACES, replacing the requirement for finite LUT files with precise algorithms. Panasonic Intros Compact, Lightweight Super 35mm Camera

Panasonic debuted its 5.7K cinema camera, the AU-EVA1, at Cine Gear Expo in Hollywood last week. The camera, which is meant to fill a gap between the Panasonic Lumix GH5 4K mirrorless camera and the VariCam LT 4K cinema camera, is aimed at handheld shooting, making it ideal for commercials, documentaries and music videos. The compact camera, which can easily fit in a backpack, weighs 2.65 pounds (body only), sports a newly designed sensor and will be priced under $8,000 when it ships in the fall.
