AI startup Runway has a new tool called Game Worlds that lets users generate simple video game worlds using images and text-based prompts. At the moment, Runway Game Worlds can only help generate simple text-based interactive adventures that include pictures, but the company has plans to enable more complex game creation by the end of the year. Runway CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela says the company is interested in partnering with video game companies who are willing to provide game data that can be used to train the company’s models in exchange for generative capabilities. Pandemic Could Have Long-Term Impact on Gaming Industry

The COVID-19 pandemic is boosting the multi-billion-dollar video-game industry into the stratosphere, and Big Tech companies predict the trend will endure past the pandemic. Microsoft, for example, plans to acquire the company behind the “Doom” game franchise for $7.5 billion. NPD Group reported that about 244 million people in the U.S. play video games, up 15 percent from a 2018 study. Machine Learning Is Being Used to Upscale Classic Games

Gamers have discovered a way to use machine learning to improve the graphics of older games. Called “AI upscaling,” the technique uses an algorithm to take a low-resolution image and, based on training data, generates a version with more pixels. Although upping the resolution of images is not new, machine learning has improved both the speed and the quality of the end result. On the r/GameUpscale subreddit, which is moderated by Norwegian teacher and student Daniel Trolie, users share “tips and tricks” on the practice.
