Google has added a Canvas feature to its Gemini AI chatbot that provides users with a real-time collaborative space where writing and coding projects can be refined and other ideas iterated and shared. “Canvas is designed for seamless collaboration with Gemini,” according to Gemini Product Director Dave Citron, who notes that Canvas makes it “an even more effective collaborator” in helping bring ideas to life. The move marks a trend whereby AI companies are trying to turn chatbot platforms into turnkey productivity suites. Google has begun rolling out an updated Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental reasoning model that is faster and supports new features like file upload. The model, which is trained to break down prompts into a series of steps for more indepth responses, will now power Google Deep Research, replacing Gemini 1.5 Pro, and broadening its access so “anyone will be able to try it across the globe in 45-plus languages,” according to Google. “Deep research” is emerging as a model trend, with Perplexity’s Deep Research launching less than three weeks after OpenAI unveiled its own ChatGPT deep research agent, which followed Google’s similar Gemini feature. As its name implies, deep research is a productivity tool, designed to save time by having an AI agent scour materials, compiling data and analysis. Perplexity’s Deep Research “performs dozens of searches, reads hundreds of sources, and reasons through the material to autonomously deliver a comprehensive report,” across topics ranging “from finance and marketing to product research,” the company says. Google has released its AI assistant, Gemini Live, and is positioning it to replace Google Assistant on mobile. Gemini Live is rolling out on Android to subscribers of Gemini Advanced, which is part of the $20 monthly Google One AI Premium plan. Those consumers who purchase the new Pixel 9 Pro — which begins shipping this week — will get the assistant as part of a year of free access to Gemini Advanced, a $240 value, according to the company.
