Broadcaster Cox Media Group has teamed with the McClatchy newspaper chain on a free ad-supported hyper-local streaming network called Neighborhood TV. The partners expect NTV to reach thousands of small communities across America. Cox designates as “local” a cluster of neighborhoods or towns within and adjacent to designated market areas (DMAs), thereby building out rather than directly competing with established operations. The service is expanding after desktop and mobile tests in Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina notched more than 100 million monthly impressions, according to Cox. Facebook tested “Neighborhoods” in Canada and is now rolling it out in four U.S. cities: Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Charlotte, North Carolina; Newark, New Jersey; and San Diego, California. The new feature will be playing catch-up with similar social apps, including Nextdoor (which had 50 percent annual growth in daily active users last year), Amazon’s Neighbors by Ring, and crime-tracking app Citizen. Facebook’s Neighborhoods, which asks the user to introduce himself and list interests, aims to personalize the user’s experiences and ads. The ABC Owned Television Stations Group has debuted Localish, a brand targeting digital-native millennials with hyper-local stories that will be distributed on digital and social media platforms. The stations already have a large digital and social presence, making this segue to Localish a natural move. Creation of the brand is based on ABC research that found this cohort feels better about their local community than the world.
