Eight of the largest cinema chains in the U.S. and Canada have committed to investing more than $2.2 billion to modernize theaters over the next three years. The announcement was made by the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), which says the eight investors represent over 21,000 screens and 67 percent of the box office. The funds will be used to improve everything from picture and sound to air quality, dining, concessions and additional entertainment options. “This investment reflects that commitment in a tangible way that every moviegoer will see and enjoy,” said NATO President and CEO Michael O’Leary. Three months after MoviePass co-founder Stacy Spikes shared hopes to resurrect his subscription movie service, shuttered late 2019, the executive held a New York press conference to announce his summer reboot. “A lot of people lost money. A lot of people lost trust,” Spikes told reporters, explaining that he plans to run MoviePass 2.0 like a co-op, with top-level stakeholders eligible to hold partial ownership and a lifetime subscription. “Moviegoing is not going anywhere. With movie theaters shuttered across the U.S. due to the coronavirus, the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) asked Congress and the Trump administration for loan guarantees and tax benefits to help pay workers and keep theater chains afloat. The top 10 theater chains in the nation have already or will shut down their theaters, representing 89 percent of U.S. screens. NATO represents 33,000+ screens in all 50 states.
