Meta Platforms has packed more artificial intelligence into a smaller package with Llama 3.3, which the company released last week. The open-source large language model (LLM) “improves core performance at a significantly lower cost, making it even more accessible to the entire open-source community,” Meta VP of Generative AI Ahmad Al-Dahle wrote on X social. The 70 billion parameter text-only Llama 3.3 is said to perform on par with the 405 billion parameter model that was part of Meta’s Llama 3.1 release in July, with less computing power required, significantly lowering its operational costs. AI-startup Inflection has unveiled a new foundation LLM (large language model) to power its Pi chatbot. Inflection-1 approximates OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 in terms of size and functionality, which puts it on a par with ChatGPT insofar as model training. Inflection claims its LLM exceeds some benchmarks when tested against that competing system, as well as Meta Platforms’ LLaMA, DeepMind’s Chinchilla and Google’s PaLM-540B. Pi is short for Personal Intelligence, and Inflection compiled its LLM with a goal of creating an emotive AI whose conversation provides a reasonable facsimile of empathy and human-like sensibilities. Advances in language comprehension for artificial intelligence are issuing from San Francisco’s OpenAI and London-based DeepMind. OpenAI, which has been working on large language models, says it now lets customers fine-tune its GPT-3 models using their own custom data, while the Alphabet-owned DeepMind is talking-up Gopher, a 280-billion parameter deep-learning language model that has scored impressively on tests. Sophisticated language models have the ability to comprehend natural language, as well as predict and generate text, requirements for creating advanced AI systems that can dispense information and advice or that are required to follow instructions.
