Parks Associates debuted a report looking at trends in OTT, focusing on 2010 through 2016. In an effort to lure content creators and better compete with social platforms such as Facebook and Snapchat, Twitter announced that it will share 70 percent of ad revenue with users that upload videos. “Those are much better margins than what a video creator can get on the world’s biggest video site, Google’s YouTube, which pays creators 55 percent of the video ad revenue,” reports Wired. Twitter has reportedly already applied the 70-30 revenue split with some big names, including the National Hockey League and Major League Baseball. However, Twitter is playing catch up; YouTube generates billions of daily video views, and Facebook algorithms have been emphasizing live video in the platform’s News Feed. Hewlett-Packard’s most recent television advertisement, released Monday, is made entirely of Vines. The 30-second spot features the Pavilion x360 notebook, promoted by Vine stars through short video clips. The company worked to identify social media talent with marketing agency Niche, which focuses on Vine stars. HP’s creative agency 180LA also worked on the commercial. DirecTV execs say online video is one of the “growth areas” it will be focusing on in the next few years as it attempts to attract younger potential customers who aren’t paying for cable service. It wants to target niche audiences in particular and is considering offering tailored programming to those viewers. Children and Latinos are the two major audiences the company is eyeing.
