OpenAI is working to build a social network that will compete against Elon Musk’s X and Meta’s Instagram, reports say. Though still in the early stages, the project is revolving around an internal prototype that is said to involve a social feed that leverages ChatGPT’s image generator. It’s unclear if an OpenAI social app would be standalone or integrated with ChatGPT, but either way it would most likely heighten the competition between rivals Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who recently fended off an unsolicited offer by Musk to purchase his company for $97.4 billion. Instagram is experimenting with a community chat feature that lets users gather in groups of up to 250. Meta’s photo- and video-sharing network is prototyping the feature internally, though external sources with knowledge of it are comparing it to Discord since it reportedly allows users to form chats around different topics and control who can join. While participation is said to be capped at 250 simultaneous users per community, all are invited to join and message. Instagram has had a flurry of new features, among them a video tool called Edits, and “profile cards” geared toward small businesses that want a more professional presence on the app. Continue reading Instagram Is Internally Testing Discord-Style Community Chat

Anthropic has created a method to defend AI models against “jailbreaks” — unauthorized workarounds to get an AI model to do things it was trained not to do, like providing instructions for building chemical weapons. Called Constitutional Classifiers, the system was 95 percent effective in identifying and preventing jailbreaks of Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet in a test environment. In an effort to drum up real-world red-teaming, the company offered cash prizes of up to $15,000 to anyone who could jailbreak its Sonnet AI model. After some 3,000 hours of attempts by 185 participants, none claimed an award. Now the company is offering additional incentives. When walking through the Japanese exhibits at CES 2025, it was difficult to miss the huge black spherical drone aircraft HAGAMOSphere that was prominently positioned as if demanding the passerby’s respect. And respect it deserved, for this drone prototype was one of this year’s CES Innovation Award recipients recognized for outstanding design and engineering in consumer technology. HAGAMOSphere’s innovation is its distinct ability to move both horizontally and vertically without tilting the aircraft. If the HAGAMOSphere is outfitted with a suitable camera, jerky movements in captured drone footage could potentially be eliminated or mitigated.
