Vimeo Says Its AI Makes Video as Easy to Edit as Word Docs

Vimeo is leveraging artificial intelligence to automate video editing, and says its new AI suite of tools enables the creation of “a fully produced video in minutes by generating scripts from text prompts, recording videos in one take, and editing content as easily as a Word doc,” the company claims. Features include recording using a built-in screen teleprompter and the ability to quickly delete unwanted filler words (“ums” and “uhs”) and long pauses. The video hosting and sharing platform is rolling out the AI tools in July as part of the $20 per month standard subscription.

Vimeo’s research indicates “80 percent of people prefer videos over written text, yet most people are uncomfortable creating videos,” the company shares in a press release.

According to Vimeo, its AI power pack eliminates barriers by “generating a polished script in seconds” and allowing “the opportunity to be more natural in front of the camera with a customizable teleprompter, and the ability to remove any unwanted moments in just a few clicks.”

Vimeo Chief Product Officer Ashraf Alkarmi told TechCrunch the new capabilities are geared toward “entry-level video creators — like CEOs, employees and social media managers — who lack the skills, time and resources to achieve the effects that they want to achieve.” Vimeo’s internal indicates 50 percent of its customers typically do more than one take and 25 percent do more than five takes.

“Despite being the most effective way to communicate powerful messages, video production inherently creates a barrier to this preferred communication channel,” Alkarmi said, adding that Vimeo’s AI-powered workflow “reduces those barriers, giving any creator the confidence to actually create videos in one take.”

Vimeo’s script generator uses the OpenAI API, leveraging it to allow users to create a script based on text prompts and inputs such as tone (e.g. “inspiring,” “funny,” “confident” or “casual”) selected from a drop-down menu, as well as length.

Once the user is satisfied with the script, it can be loaded into the teleprompter, placed “about eye-height right beneath the location of the camera, so the user doesn’t need to look away from the screen,” writes SiliconANGLE, adding that “the video editor now has a text-based capability that allows users to see a transcript of what they actually said and they can edit their video alongside the timeline-based editor using text.”

Hundreds of thousands of videos are uploaded to Vimeo everyday, the company says, and Alkarmi notes “this is just the beginning of our new and integrated AI video strategy,” predicting the technology “will be a game-changer for how companies should be communicating and connecting with distributed teams and customers.”

Sketching “a future in which AI knowledge is a prerequisite, not a luxury, to video production,” Alkarmi says organizations need to adapt now “or risk getting left behind.”

The company is inviting early access sign-up on its website.
