Wall-Sized Touchscreens in Our Near Future, Says Microsoft
March 12, 2013
According to Microsoft’s vision of the future, our lives will soon be impacted by large, wall-sized touchscreens, on which we will perform daily tasks, communicate with loved ones and much more. Additionally, all of our gadgets will respond to our voice commands and we’ll be able to seamlessly transfer information between devices with just a few swipes and/or taps.
All of this was included in Microsoft’s vision of the future, outlined in a video it recently released to announce its new Envisioning Center on the company’s Redmond campus. “The Center highlights Microsoft’s vision of the future of computing — not for generations to come, but in the next five to 10 years. That future, of course, involves a lot of Microsoft products, especially its new Surface tablets,” writes Wired.
In the video, (see it on Wired or the Microsoft bog announcement) the company showcases a world in which the physical and digital join together seamlessly.
According to the vision, “you’ll be able to interact with digital screens on your walls, and push information from your Surface tablet or Windows smartphone to those walls. When you’re home, you’ll be able to push photos to all of the devices in your house — say, for example, digital photo frames you have hanging on the walls or sitting on shelves,” explains the article.
With the wall-based computers and screens, the company projects a vision of the smart home, which is outfitted with dozens of connected devices. “I like to think of it as a concept car that allows us to share what it might be like to experience future technologies with visitors, get their feedback, tweak, remix and discuss,” Microsoft editor Steve Clayton wrote in the blog post announcing the Envisioning Center. “It’s all part of advancing the trends we think have the greatest potential.”
