Walmart Takes on Chromecast with Its 4K Google TV Streamer

Walmart’s update on the Onn streaming device, the Onn 4K Pro, offers several improvements, including more storage and RAM, additional ports and always-on microphones ready for Google Assistant voice commands for the Google TV device. It also offers Dolby Atmos as well as smart hub capabilities like hands-free voice control and compatibility with Google Home devices, Walmart says. Priced at $49.88, the Onn 4K Pro will be “available this month,” although it appears to have already made it onto retail shelves at some Walmart locations, as per an early unboxing video post.

“The specs are apparently set at a quad-core Cortex-A55 CPU, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage” and the device “features support for Wi-Fi 6,” writes TechRadar.

Full specs — which include Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, as well as an HDMI port, USB-A port and Ethernet port — are available at Walmart.com. A physical microphone-off switch safeguards privacy for those who don’t want an always-on Google Assistant.

The upgrades “should mean a smoother experience when running apps on the Onn Pro,” which is compatible with Chromecast for those who want to send content wirelessly, TechRadar notes, adding that “Google’s own Chromecast with Google TV is starting to feel a little dated by comparison, though rumors of a new model continue to swirl.”

Announcements may be forthcoming at the next Google I/O event, set for May 14.

While “there’s no firm release date,” the Onn 4K Pro “will start to become widely available in Walmart stores and online over the coming weeks,” Walmart told 9to5Google. The outlet wrote Friday that “already this week, the device has started to be available for shipping online and has expanded to more locations just in the past couple of days.”

The release pattern is “a little confusing,” writes Android Police, noting that the product is “live” on the Walmart website, which indicates “1,000s sold and 100s currently in people’s carts.” The numbers appear to confirm it is “a hot item, as the product is currently sold out, and there’s no knowledge of when we will see replenishment.”

As with other Google TV devices, the Onn Pro offers “700,000+ movies, shows, and more across 10,000+ apps, plus 800+ free live TV channels — organized all in one place,” according to Walmart.
