WBD Updates Discovery+ Tech Stack and Adds New Features

Warner Bros. Discovery is updating its Discovery+ technology to offer expanded streaming features, initially for subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. As the service migrates to the same technical platform and infrastructure that powers WBD’s Max service globally, customers will gain features including more personalized recommendations, improved homepage and navigation, better in-app discovery and a mobile “share” to social media, among other things. “A singular unified platform has been central to our technology strategy, and this marks a major milestone in that journey,” WBD CTO Avi Saxena said of the change.

The change, which began rolling out last week, will be apparent to subscribers when they update their apps.

The update adds “five great new features” that may be familiar to Max subscribers, including “a new search layout for jumping between episodes” and the “ability to sign in to the app via a QR code,” according to TechRadar. “The improved navigation tools look to be the most helpful” and will aid subscribers looking for content in the app.

The new search layout, in particular, “will make jumping between episodes of a show a lot simpler,” TechRadar opines.

As for the “sharing functionality that lets Discovery+ subscribers send content to their friends and family more easily,” WBD’s announcement specifies it is only for “adult profile users,” TechRadar points out.

In addition to improving the customer experience, unifying the Discovery+ tech stack with that used for Max and other WBD streaming services will make it easier for the company to make backend changes, like bug fixes and system updates.

In addition to improving ancillary content services, moving forward WBD plans to continue the international expansion of its flagship Max platform, building “strategic distribution partnerships and driving higher penetration in existing markets with its ad-supported tier,” explains The Wrap.

“Discovery+ is the latest streaming service to roll out an overhaul of its app in 2025, with YouTube TV teasing a big Netflix update earlier this month, Prime Video launching a new app for Apple TV devices in February, and Max making a big change to its navigation menu in January,” reports TechRadar.
