WordPress AI Website Builder a Free Solution for Basic Sites
April 15, 2025
Popular website hosting platform WordPress.com has launched an AI website builder that can facilitate creation of a relatively simple website in just a few minutes. Free to anyone who registers for an account, the tool uses a chat-style interface, making website building “as simple as having a conversation,” according to the company, which says the new feature “takes your input and instantly creates a fully designed, content-ready WordPress website, complete with text, layouts, and images.” At the moment, the tool is not able to create a complex site that requires e-commerce or other integrations.
As with similar AI offerings from competitors like Squarespace and Wix, “more advanced website edits and layouts will still require an understanding of site development and design tools,” writes TechCrunch, noting “that could change as the AIs learn from the edits users make to their sites after the initial creation.”
The company is targeting freelancers and small-business entrepreneurs who want a professional online presence with minimal effort, as well as developers who want a sandbox to spin up quick pitches.
WordPress is run by Automattic, which also operates the free and open-source publishing platform that can be found at WordPress.org. That arm of the operation allows for more complex site builds, offering a host of other tools (some of which require payment) like WooCommerce and Jetpack, so newbies will find room to graduate upward.
But those who are just getting started may find this an easy entry point. The Verge reports that starting with a “fake retro video game store” concept it was able to create “a super basic but serviceable site laid out in sections like Discover, Events, and Visit Us.”
To get started with the WordPress site builder, users must enter a prompt that explains their website idea and name. In an explanatory blog post, the company provides step-by-step instructions, also available via a YouTube tutorial.
“To launch the finalized website to the public, a hosting plan is required. These typically range from $48 per year for a personal site to $300 per year for a business site,” TechCrunch explains. “WordPress.com says that users who create with the AI builder will need to pick between the Premium ($96/year) and Business plans, however.”
WordPress.com is offering a free trial, that comes with 30 AI prompts to create and polish the site. The hosting plans come with an unlimited supply of prompts.
