Worldcoin Brings Privacy to Shopify, Reddit, Telegram, Others

Crypto ID project Worldcoin, co-founded by Sam Altman, is integrating with Microsoft’s “Minecraft,” as well as Reddit, Telegram, Shopify and Mercado Libre. Concurrently, the company is debuting World ID 2.0 in Mexico and Singapore. World ID 2.0 enhances the privacy features of Worldcoin’s “digital passport for humanness.” Rolled out in July, World ID provides identify verification, claiming to allow easy distinction between bots and humans online. “Retailers are losing an estimated $100 billion per year from return fraud, bots and coupon stacking,” the Worldcoin Foundation said in making the announcement.

The digital gaming industry has also battled the impact of bots that are challenging — and, on occasion, fraudulently beating — real humans in online play, apparently affecting their willingness to participate in some competitive games, Worldcoin explained in its announcement.

Publicly launched in July, the Worldcoin protocol was subsequently updated to the improved World ID 2.0, which had existing integrations with apps including Discord, Talent Protocol and Okta’s Auth0.

“Individuals can quickly and easily verify their humanness on the platforms they use every day,” Worldcoin says of the “Sign in with World ID” integration developers can tag onto their apps. The complete list of  integrations is available at the new Worldcoin App Store.

As part of the current upgrade, “World ID will have three levels that enable a wider range of use cases, including Orb+ with face authentication so only you get to use your World ID on important actions,” the organization details in a blog post.

“It’s a much easier way for developers to build integrations, Tools for Humanity Head of Product Tiago Sada, a core contributor to Worldcoin, told TechCrunch” regarding the 2.0 update, explaining “we’ve rebuilt the way it works.”

Examples of functionality for the new integrations include letting Reddit moderators “give special permissions to those who use their World ID, ‘so they know you’re not spamming,’” Sada told TechCrunch. Shopify store owners will also be able to use World ID for special promotions as well as fraud prevention.

“The Reddit integration is through its public API and is ‘not an official Reddit-supported integration,’ Courtney Geesey-Dorr, Reddit’s senior communications manager, told TechCrunch.

Sada called World ID 2.0 a “monumental upgrade” in an interview with CoinDesk, including “a major expansion to its eye-scanning identity platform. The new protocol “combines ‘ideas that were originally laid on the white paper’ with ‘feedback that we’ve heard from developers,’” Sada told CoinDesk, which calls Tools for Humanity.
