Xreal $400 Air 2 AR Glasses are for Games, Movies and More
October 27, 2023
Xreal (formerly Nreal) is releasing its Xreal Air 2 and Xreal Air 2 Pro augmented reality glasses. The latest iteration of AR glasses from the company is designed for everything from movies to TV to games. The Air 2 AR glasses “can turn whatever the wearer is viewing into a big screen experience” of up to 330-inches, the company claims, citing the integration of Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ Micro OLED displays that pack a whopping 4,032 pixels-per-inch to deliver “a crisp and visually stunning virtual screen” in Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 per eye. An ultra-high contrast ratio of 100,000:1, and 500 nits brightness ensure sharp detail.
“The displays have been precisely calibrated to provide accurate color reproduction, meeting the Gamma 2.2 standard,” writes VentureBeat, noting the Xreal Air 2 series also offers a remarkable response rate speed of 0.01 milliseconds or less and a fast refresh rate of up to 120Hz.”
All that in a thin and lightweight frame that weighs 72 grams (versus roughly 20 grams for regular glasses).
This is Xreal’s second commercial AR wearable release, and the Chinese company has gained a following with its relatively low price and wide compatibility with platforms including Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Valve Steam Deck as well as PCs and Macs, iOS and Android.
VentureBeat says the AR wearables “are set to usher in a new era of immersive entertainment.” Xreal co-founder Peng Jin said in an interview that wearable displays will be accepted as part of everyday life, and will be to AR display “what iPod was to iPhone. You start with a single application that is appealing and that add value.”
In a news release, Jin says “augmented reality holds the promise of a paradigm shift for how people interact with technology,” explaining that Xreal AR glasses “put big screen TVs, theater-quality projectors and full HD monitors” in users’ pockets, offering a new way to experience entertainment and productivity “on the go and at home for extended sessions.”
The Xreal Air 2 and Xreal Air 2 Pro, “start at $399 and $449 respectively, and go on sale in November in the U.S., UK and in select markets in Europe,” writes CNBC, noting preorders are underway now.
“The market for augmented and virtual reality headsets is in its infancy with just 8.5 million headsets expected to be shipped this year, as the market faces a lull due to a drop in consumer spending led by the tough global economic environment,” CNBC adds.
