YouTube Music Experiments with AI for Generating Cover Art
November 1, 2023
YouTube Music is rolling out an experimental feature that lets English-language users tap artificial intelligence to generate cover art for their playlists. Without leaving the app, creators can now “effortlessly explore from a range of visual themes and options to create one-of-a-kind cover art,” YouTube explains, adding the feature would be rolling out in different languages. That was one of a series of new personalization and discovery tools the streamer recently announced. The company is also adding “speed dial” so music fans can effortlessly revert to their favorite recent listening experiences.
First, users “click on the current default image of a playlist,” reports TechCrunch. “From there, you can scroll through a number of themes, such as travel, nature, landscape, fantasy, animals and humor.”
Once a theme is chosen, “you can scroll through a selection of prompts,” TechCrunch notes. “For instance, if you select the animal theme, you can choose to receive an image of a pug in the style of a Medieval Gothic painting or in the style of a Pop Art painting.”
“Image generation courtesy of AI is a feature Google recently brought into SGE” (Search Generative Experience) earlier this month, writes Android Central, explaining “those enrolled can type directly into Search and instruct the AI software to create an image based on the description written.”
Engadget reports that YouTube’s new speed dial feature “lets you jump right back into recent listens, like specific artists and playlists,” adding that “the format is very reminiscent of the top of Spotify’s homepage, but YouTube appears to show more options than its competitor.”
These features follow other recent updates by YouTube Music, as detailed in a recent blog post.
Separately, YouTube Music has officially added support for Apple’s HomePod, Android Police reports, making it “available for Premium and Music Premium members through the YouTube Music app.” While Apple’s HomePod lacks native YouTube Music support, it “stands out for its impressive music quality.”
