YouTube Premium Offers Speed Controls and Improved Audio
January 27, 2025
YouTube is rolling out new experimental features for Premium users and letting those paid plan subscribers access more than one test feature at a time. Among the exploratory features now available to YouTube Premium users is high-quality 256kbps audio on music videos and the ability to “jump ahead” on the web, something previously available only on mobile devices. For iOS users, picture-in-picture and smart downloads for YouTube Shorts are also among the new features. In addition, the company announced bundled pricing for those users who subscribe to both YouTube Premium and Google One Premium.
And soon, YouTube Premium subscribers will be able to “fine-tune” their viewing experience with expanded playback speed options up to 4x on mobile devices, YouTube announced in a blog post that lists the experimental features:
- High-quality audio: Premium members will experience new audio enhancements, enjoying high-quality 256kbps audio on music videos with more clarity and depth.
- Picture-in-Picture for YouTube Shorts on iOS: Watch your favorite Shorts while browsing other apps or checking messages.
- Smart Downloads for YouTube Shorts on iOS: You will have recommended Shorts selected and automatically downloaded for offline viewing.
- “Jump ahead” on web: Previously available on mobile devices, you can now seamlessly skip ahead to the best parts of a video while browsing on web browsers.
- Faster playback speeds on mobile: Soon, you will be able to fine-tune your viewing experience with expanded playback speed options up to 4x on mobile devices.
These updates “seem to focus on drawing in short-form content enthusiasts while addressing the ever-shrinking attention spans of viewers,” writes Android Authority, calling the ability to test multiple experimental features at once “one of the big changes,” as “previously, you were only allowed to enable one experimental feature at a time for your YouTube account.”
YouTube “routinely tests new features that users can activate from youtube.com/new,” reports TechCrunch, noting that the higher audio bitrate of up to 256kbps was already available through YouTube Music “when you turn up the settings to High in the playback settings.”
Social Media Today notes the experimental features “may or may not ever become fully fledged elements,” but point to “where it’s looking to develop new tools, including AI functionality, providing a window into YouTube’s engineering pipeline, and what it thinks will benefit the user experience.”
YouTube also announced it is rolling out a bundled price for U.S. users who subscribe to YouTube Premium along with a Google One Premium VPN plan (sign-up is available from the bottom of the blog post).
“By purchasing a Google One Premium plan with at least 2TB of storage (starting at $20/month), subscribers can add YouTube Premium for $11.99/month instead of the usual $13.99/month,” writes Android Authority.
